Security cameras

Choose useful views, then choose cameras.

Start with what you need to see at the porch, driveway, or another entrance. Compare cable routes, camera power, lighting, and the view in recorded footage.

Include privacy boundaries before deciding on indoor cameras or pointing a camera toward neighboring property.

Storage checklist

Review storage with a practical checklist

Review local, cloud, and hybrid storage options against the way you would actually use footage.

  • PlaybackHow quickly can you find 7:40 on Tuesday — and does it need a subscription?
  • Clip exportCan you save and share a clip, at a quality that still answers the question?
  • RetentionHow long before recordings are overwritten, at the settings actually proposed?
  • Outage behaviorWhat records when the internet drops, and what stops when power drops?

Where recordings can live

Most home designs use one of these, or a supported combination. Confirm the behavior of the specific model proposed.

A simplified comparison of residential recording locations. Features vary by product and subscription.
Storage location Typical strength What to verify
On the camera (memory card)Keeps working without internet on supported modelsCard size, overwrite behavior, how you retrieve a clip
On-site recorder or hubContinuous recording and local playbackDrive capacity, noise and placement, who can access it
Cloud serviceFootage survives if the camera is takenSubscription terms, upload capacity, what is stored and for how long
HybridLocal recording plus an off-site copyExactly which video is copied, and at what quality
In practice

Judge the scene, not the spec sheet.

Ask to see how the proposed setup handles the scene you care about, rather than choosing on resolution alone. A wide view of the whole yard and a readable view of the porch are different jobs and often different cameras.

Aim cameras at the area you need to cover, not neighboring windows. Keep cameras out of bathrooms and other private spaces, discuss indoor cameras with everyone in the household, and review applicable rules before enabling audio recording.

Planning information and consultation requests. Installation and monitoring availability, provider details, and service terms must be confirmed before work is arranged. This form is not for emergencies.
